Hon’ble Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh Inaugurates 3.7 MW Solar Plant at Chushul, Ladakh.

New Delhi, India - Group Surya, through its flagship company Surya International Enterprise Limited, has successfully executed one of India’s most advanced 3.7 MW solar–hydrogen renewable energy projects at Chushul, Ladakh. The project was virtually inaugurated by Hon’ble Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh and marks a historic milestone in solar power, green hydrogen storage, and high-altitude defence energy solutions.

A pioneering solar–hydrogen project built for Ladakh’s extreme conditions

Situated at an altitude of around 4,500 metres, the Chushul solar–hydrogen project is among the world’s highest and most challenging renewable energy installations. Despite harsh climatic conditions and temperatures dipping to –40°C, Surya International Enterprise Limited successfully commissioned the project in a record eight months.

The project strengthens India’s leadership in:

  • Solar power in Ladakh
  • Hydrogen energy and long-duration storage
  • High-altitude green energy for defence
  • Microgrid and clean-power solutions in Himalayan terrains

Replacing diesel generators with clean, reliable power for the Indian Army

The newly deployed solar–hydrogen microgrid will replace traditional diesel generator sets at remote Army posts, delivering substantial environmental and logistical benefits:

  • Reduced carbon emissions
  • 24×7 reliable power supply in remote posts
  • No need for diesel transport through dangerous mountain routes
  • Stronger energy security for high-altitude border areas

Every three units of power produced saves the effort of transporting one litre of diesel to remote Himalayan defence locations — a major advantage for Indian Army logistics.

Hydrogen-based microgrid providing 200 kW round-the-clock power

Surya International Enterprise Limited has engineered a fully off-grid hydrogen-powered microgrid, designed to supply 200 kW of continuous clean energy, day and night, throughout the year.

Key features include:

  • Solar generation integrated with hydrogen production and storage
  • Long-duration storage ideal for sub-zero temperatures
  • Reliable off-grid operation at extreme altitudes
  • Designed specifically for defence applications in remote terrain

This project stands out globally as one of the most unique solar–hydrogen energy systems ever deployed at such high altitude.

Advancing India’s Net Zero and green defence mandate

With this project, Group Surya and Surya International Enterprise Limited are supporting India’s growing focus on:

  • Decarbonising defence operations
  • Expanding solar and hydrogen energy infrastructure
  • Strengthening border-area energy independence
  • Accelerating progress toward national Net Zero goals

The Chushul project sets a strong foundation for future renewable microgrids in defence, remote villages, border infrastructure, and cold-desert regions.
